Happy New Year! 2016 is over and the new year is upon us. As we embark on 2017, it’s important to set goals to give you and your team direction and focus. In the latest issue of Dental Practice Management, I go over exactly how to set your goals for the new year.

Here are just some of the takeaways from my article — How to make 2017 your most successful year ever: Get SMART with a new year of goals.

Set Specific Goals — it’s important to make your goals clear so you know how to take the appropriate steps to achieve them and, more importantly, whether they have been met.

Set Measurable Goals — creating detailed goals allows you to measure your team’s success. It also allows you to adjust accordingly as you reach specific benchmarks. Measuring your team’s success gives you both momentum and satisfaction as you continue moving forward.

Set Attainable Goals — be realistic when setting your goals. While admirable, setting goals that are too lofty to achieve under any practical metric can be demoralizing to your team and break confidence. Conversely, setting goals that are too easy won’t unlock your team’s potential.

Set Relevant Goals — make sure that your goals take you in the direction you want your practice to head.

Set Time-bound Goals — it’s critical that your goals have a deadline as it gives your team a sense of urgency and it will allow you to map out the direction of your practice.
