Lead with Positivity

The single most significant advantage any business can achieve is organizational health.  Patrick Lencioni, the author of the book The Advantage, says that “Organizational health trumps everything else in business.” I agree; I am convinced that the determining difference between successful businesses and unsuccessful ones has little to do with what they know or how smart they are; it has everything to do with how healthy they are.

Thinking about what you can’t do is worrying.  Thinking about what you can do is planning.

Control What You Can Control – It’s simple but true.  You can’t control most things in life, but you can control your attitude, effort, and actions.  You can’t control what people are saying and thinking about you, and you can’t control the competition from all of those other similar businesses.

Create From the Inside-Out –Begin your leadership journey by creating a solid foundation of a clear, compelling vision for your business.  It can impact, influence, and inspire your team to focus on what they can control within the company and go about doing it.  Without a vision, no effort or money can help; real change can be achieved with vision.  Vision creates the solid ground on which we build the future.    Vision creates a healthy, productive space where everyone can prosper.  The noise, media, negativity, and competition only have power over you if you let it.  You won’t let circumstances define you if you know the truth that you create from the inside-out, not outside in.  When you know the power is on the inside and create the world with your beliefs, passion, positivity, purpose, work ethic, and spirit, the business becomes the success it was meant to be.

Focus on Solutions instead of Complaints – When things are not going well, it’s easy to complain, and truly great leaders don’t complain.  They focus on solutions.  If you are complaining, you are not leading.  If you are leading, you aren’t complaining.  Instead of focusing on where you are, think about where you want to go and what you want to create.  Instead of complaining about what’s holding you back, think about solutions that will propel you forward.  With the foundation of a compelling Vision, you can ask questions; why are we here, where are we going collectively, what steps can we make to move forward, what does the future bring if we get stuck in complaining?

Embrace Change – People don’t like the messy transition required to create change, even when we actually want what change produces.  Leaders and teams that thrive embrace the entire process of transition and change, knowing it leads to improvement and growth.  You can’t alter the fact that change exists, but you can adjust your view and approach to living a happier and more fulfilled life.  Stagnancy is death, and change is what makes you alive.  We’re either moving up or moving down.  By accepting, embracing, and seeking change, we make the conscious choice to keep moving forward and continue growing and improving.

Stay Positive and Do the Work – It may sound cliché, and it is key to success.  Through challenges, adversity, and negativity, you must stay positive and continue to do the work, tune out the noise, focus on solutions and work hard every day.  Embrace change, work together as a team, and create positive change from the inside out.  Over time performance improves, the numbers rise, confidence grows, people feel and see the difference, and then everyone starts talking about why you are succeeding instead of failing.  Many leaders think positivity is a soft skill, and they act like it’s just a nice way to lead.  I have found that organizations I work with want and get successful hard results have embraced that positivity is the only way to lead.
